Our History
Doncaster business, Bell Brothers joined the H L Brown family group of stores back in the 1920s and two separate stores were situated in Doncaster. And subsequently they came to reside in the store’s current location together in 2014, at the Frenchgate Shopping Centre.
First established in 1781, Bell Brothers was founded by well-respected watchmaker Joseph Bell. Joseph worked for some time under the famous horologist Thomas Mudge, who was the inventor of the ‘lever escapement’. This feature was applied to pocket watches and remains an important part of every mechanical pocket or wristwatch made ever since. H L Brown’s watchmaking business was founded in Sheffield in 1861 by Harris Leon Brown, who came from Poland to work as a watchmaker.
A major refurbishment took place in Spring 2023 and the store is now known solely as H L Brown Doncaster.
Our Team
Generations of expertise is on offer at our store. The H L Brown family of jewellers which acquired the Bell Brothers’ business approximately 100 years ago is still owned and managed by descendants of the H L Brown family today.
Managing Director James Frampton is H L Brown’s great-great grandson. He joined the family business after qualifying as a gemmologist and working in the jewellery trade in Switzerland and London.
As well as H L Brown in Doncaster you can find the company’s other stores around the region. There is H L Brown in Sheffield, James Usher in Lincoln, Bright & Sons in Scarborough and Barbara Cattle in York. And back in Doncaster, the H L Brown sales team is led by store manager Paul Downend with assistant manager Joanne Marshall.
H L Brown Doncaster also offer a range of services including a jewellery and watch repair service. Our in-house jewellers and watchmaker can advise on repairs, servicing and restorations.
Our company NAJ Registered Valuer, Georgi Anderson, can assist you with valuations for insurance and probate purposes, and valuation for family division.
